• Nausea
• Bad taste in the mouth
• Pain while swallowing
• Food sticking while swallowing

Managing GERD

One of the first things that your elderly loved one’s doctor will do after diagnosing GERD is to try to determine which foods and beverages trigger a GERD attack. Small, frequent meals also help to alleviate the effects of GERD. For elderly loved ones who do experience heartburn, over-the-counter antacids can help to relieve some of the pain. Foam wedges under the mattress to lift the upper part of the bed and waiting at least two hours after eating to lie down can also help. If you’re not able to help manage all of this with your elderly relative, keep in mind that home care providers have experience with all sorts of health conditions and can provide assistance even when you can’t.
